Seeing as the proclaimed 'resurrection' is going so well, it is time we start digging a little deeper in policies and start to question the stability and structure of FT in general. Where does that start? The heart and soul of FT, Fish Tank Classic. The way it is now, we have me and Alex as Operators of Office, and then a plethora of you as administrators. On paper, this looks good, but there are a few undermining issues that exist with the way this is arranged. First off, the general bias that the operator of Office, surf, whatever server we are running, is the 'leader' of FT must go. As influential as Alex among others were in the past, he, as well as I currently, do not want to be referred to as leaders at all. I was very clear before I purchased our current office server that I do not plan to stick around very long in-game. There are many reasons why we do not wish to be referred to as the 'leader.' In the past, there was the falling out with a few server providers, and Fish Tank Classic had to switch IPs on multiple occasions. There were also a variety of updates done in which certain plugins needed to be updated. Of course, this is all operational duties that Alex had to handle mainly on his own. On top of all of this, Alex ALSO had to deal with the in-game bullshit/drama, whatever you want to call it. Whether it was the whole Kever hacking thing, the Syndicate Fish Bowl server, Omni and his brother getting banned for playing in the same house, the list goes on. My point is, we agree that server operation issues reflect solely on us. These other issues should not. Unfortunately, those issues require a lot of patience, patience that Alex and I do not have. Time is another issue. I cannot handle the responsibility of dealing with both operational issues and in-game issues with a family, a 9 to 5 on top of it, and other personal RL issues. Alex has his own issues as well. So what exactly are we looking for? Someone or a few of you willing to take up that responsibility with the time and patience to fill up the slot. We need someone willing to review demos, pick the right people for administration duties, and levy the storm when shit hits the fan. In the past, this was all brought on Alex and in all honesty, it shouldn't have happened and it shall not happen now. These are only minute details on what I'm looking for, but I'm sure just by skimming over this you can all understand what I as well as Alex are expecting out of someone. If we want FT to thrive as a community and FTC to thrive as it once did in the past, we must ensure a stable means of administering it NOW. So what do you all think? Are there any of you whom think they can provide the time, dedication, maturity, and patience to deal with it? Because in all honesty, if there isn't anyone, we may be pretty much wasting our time and heading for a repeat of the past. I don't want to sound pessimistic or anything, but to say that FT fell in a bitter way is saying the least. I don't want to see it happen again as I am sure that none of you diehards want to see it happen again either. |

I agree with what Knightrider has said. Especially this statement: "Alex has his own issues as well." I think we can all agree that I do, indeed, have issues! Anyway, here are a few bits I would like to add... I don't really see a rigid leadership structure going forward. We certainly didn't have one before, as far as FT Classic was concerned five years ago (when I was making all of your lives hell). We did OK before, but there were a lot of problems that never really got sorted out. So what do we do this time around? Let's try to find people who are good at doing shit, and then make those people responsible for that very same shit that they're good at doing. Crazy, right? The problem is that a lot of folks are interested in having server admin status... and that's about where they stop giving a shit about anything else. To make matters worse, we (read as: I) have a history of appointing friends to positions for which those appointees may not necessarily be qualified. I'm not saying that I regret choosing the people that I worked with on FT Classic before--they are all good people (even Goose). That said, I wish that I had showed more courage in asking for help from people that weren't my friends. As far as what we're trying to create now: how are admin policies determined? What does it take to get a hacker banned? How long can CTs camp, and where? There are historical answers to these questions if you dig back far enough in the FT Classic forums, but someone needs to figure out if that information is still relevant. Someone also needs to figure out what new policies are needed--I certainly don't think the old FT Classic had everything figured out. We've got folks paying the bills and working on configuring the server; however, other leadership roles are needed for FT Classic. I am willing to help in this capacity, but I'm pretty slammed with evaluating (and writing) plugins to really give a shit about this other stuff. |

I'm willing to take on some more administrative duties. I'm on pretty often, I think I've shown that I have a decent head on my shoulders. I try to be as unbiased as possible when making judgements, which I think we need more of. Not to blast anyone, but if this server really picks up like I think it will we are going to need more active admins. Right now it isn't a huge deal because the server isn't populated constantly yet. I think the problem will come when the server is populated at 2 or 3 in the afternoon and they need an admin. As far as you two being ops, I think you are doing a kick ass job at it despite having less time than is usually needed to perform these tasks. Keep it up is all I have to say for you badass mother fuckers. I'd like to hear what you guys have to say about a more active admin team. Lastly, I agree that we will need to start figuring out the small details (very soon). I'm pretty sure we don't even have a motd which troubles me a little. We also need to decide the other small details like Alex said; camping, banning, procedures, etc. I'd like to hear what others have to say about this kind of thing. |

You're missing the point of this thread a little. We are looking for someone to fill this leadership. Those active admins you're looking for? We're looking for someone to do that job. The point we're trying to make is we don't want people 'waiting for what we have to say.' We're not role models for this. The MOTD is on our to-do list, and we'll cross that bridge down the road, but it is far from the point of this thread. |

So this thread is strictly for FTC correct? It is unfortunate that my top picks for leaders would have been Rusty, Angry, and Emerican...but they are busy with the other parts of FT. Since we started this back up, i have tried my hardest to take a leadership role. I have been tryign to organize the forums, revamp voting policies...etc.. Im on my final week of college (permanently) and it has temporarily hindered my ability to do what i wanted to do...which is actually come up with suggestions for policies that cover everything you have mentioned in the original post. Also...i got a little taste of what Alex has been through with original FT server politics..lol. I have been the go to guy for pretty much most FTC related issues such as hacking/banning/admining (especially with Knight on vacation). I have several emails from people with demo's lol. I do not mind this at all. I will happily take the role of reviewing demo's and determining policies. Like i said, for the next few days i cannot (especially now since i have no power in my house and im currently running this on my phones 3G network). After that however, i would love the role and responsibility. And i would love the responsibility of appointing other people to specific jobs. I have good faith in several people and i have a few people in mind already who could help me. I cannot do this alone and i need a few trustworthy guys i.e. for reviewing demos and writing policies as well as jumping into the server as a request just to lay down the law. Count me in. P.S. We need more active members. I look forward to the day of nomination of Fishermanscove and the re-entry of dzebra into the clan amongst a few others. |

Take a look at the bolded of what Glitch just said. That is exactly what we need someone to do. However, to reiterate your point about it being FTC people only, of course we're going to want people taking up this role if they have hours of dedication to FTC. That is what we need, someone who plays in the server, knows the players, knows their habits, and has a pretty keen eye. I don't want anyone to be under the impression that this is a one man job. I don't care if 10 of you apply for the job. If you are SINCERE about it, you should count yourself in. If you are not, don't bother wasting my time. |

I would be more than willing to help when I can. I, too, have a job and will have school in a month, but I'm willing to put time in to help. That said, I've also had issues with certain other fishes which put me in a sticky spot. I'm one of the most annoying of the fish that are around, too. Alex, in my opinion, filled the role of "leader" best because he was not confrontational, generally kind, and knew the technical side of things. I think it might take a few people in order to fill these roles. I'd suggest 2, maybe 3 people running things. 1. The face of Fish Tank. The nice guy that everyone gets along with. 2. The Tech-savvy guy. The one who has time to get shit done for the server (get things set up, whether they're the MOTD, server settings, etc...) 3. The Decision-maker. The guy who makes the final decision on whether a ban is necessary, whether a rule makes sense, etc... All three of those could be rolled up into one person, or two people can fulfill those roles, but I see those as the biggest things needed. |
