Super down for a rerun. I think we all have some old connections to plan something ahead of time, on an updated game, or even outdated, for all of us to do an event on. I would look forward to that very much

Debate between the President of Iran and Columbia University's President |

I just wanted to know if anyone was aware of this debate and/or watched it today; and what thier thoughts were. For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about, The president of Iran has been visiting the US and openly denying the existance of the hollicost. Also he wanted to go to ground zero but was not permitted (for obvious reasons). A few days ago, the President of Columbia University challenged the President of Iran (sorry if I'm being redundant here, It's just that I'd hate to spell out Ahmadinejad 100 times) to a debate about his denial of the hollicost, seeking of nuclear power, and aiding of Iraq terrorists at war with the US. What I took from the debate, was the President of Iran tried to dance around the issue of almost every question asked of him. When asked to give a yes or no answer, he insulted the questioner and did not give an answer. He rambled on about religious beliefs, saying that science is a god given right, therefore, his seeking nuclear power (which he later denied) should not be limited by other countries. When asked about why he executed homosexuals and women, he first avoided the question by claiming women have equal rights to men in Iran, and every election 80% of the population votes, 60% of that 80% being women; sons kiss the hands of their mother as a sign of respect. When he was asked to answer the question, he said "There are no homosexuals in Iran" at which point the crowd at the debate laughed. He then claimed that all terrorist attacks in Iran were directly the fault of the US. Discuss |

This wasn't supposed to be a debate, he was delivering prepared remarks. The President of Columbia opened with a scathing, personal attack on Ahmadinejad, which I thought was out of line for the host. That said, Ahmadinejad is clearly either off his rocker or bent on distorting facts, both past and present. In my view, he's guilty of both, more the latter than the former. |

-[link]- ^^--here is the link #1 Listen to what he says, he didn't deny the holocaust, he just wants to investigate it with human curiosity. I don't blame him, even though it has "evidence," can you think of a better reason to go to war besides things that shock the conscience? #2 His country doesn't deserve nulcear power, that's basically what he feels is being portrayed? #3 He was accused of aiding Iraq terrorists at war with U.S. He responds by saying that Iran was attacked by US supported Iraq in the 1980 to 1988 "First Persian Gulf War." -[link]- #4 When you ask a political figure a difficult question, they give you a difficult answer. Lee Bollinger-"Are you for the destruction of the Israeli state, yes or no" Yes he wants their sovereignty questioned, but no he does not want to destroy them. The host asked questions that are like traps. He dances around them as he should be, cautiously. #5 Where did he deny seeking nuclear power, he said he wanted nuclear power and has paid for it.... #6 The point about executions is where you see the man's credibilty. He admits to sin and defines it bluntly as, killing, with a pause for the audience to reflect. He then asks whether or not there is capitol punishment in the US, for which we are all aware of it's existance. From what I understand, there are still places in the world that enforce levitican law literally, its a touchy subject. He chose not delve to deeply into it, pretty sure our President doesn't like talking about executions that took place under his watch either. He even gets somewhat macho and comical, when he responds that Iran doesn't experience homosexual phenomenon the way the US does. #7 He was not as blunt to say that the terrorist attacks mentioned were the fault of the US, he simply said they had their share of involvement. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad all in all, was a respectful guest, an entertaining speaker, and apparently a cogent thinker that wants to be a good leader for his people. After seeing him invite Columbia University faculty and students to his country, I am interested to see if that will be accepted. The notion of going to War with Iran is detestful, these are the people of Cyrus the Great, a man marked by respect, religious tolerance, and who opposed oppression and tyranny. The message I got from Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was that if he represented an axis evil power, then the US was the gravitational force that gave it spin. |
