My teach asked us if fiction captures truth. Or could fiction be a truth, or something along those lines. Your thoughts? | ||

Both can be true. The first is defnatly true almost all fiction is used to tell a truth. I don't remember who said it but I always liked the saying "I only lie so I can better tell the truth." I always though that a interesting saying.Take into consideration the bible a book of a lot of stories almost none of which could be true unless you believe in god. If you look closely you will see some of these events do have historical truth to them but the explanation is a little different then god like parting the dead sea instead of the red sea is a easy task assuming you come at the right time of year with the right weather. If you look deep at just about any fiction book there is a lesson or a deeper truth they want to you realize. These messages are a truth which are conveyed by fantasy. Then there are books like Animal farm which tell of real events using some fiction. For those of you who have never had to read the book it is about these Animals who rise up against the farmer and decide to run the farm by themselves. In reality the book is about the soviet union and was written by a guy who escaped it. He used a fantasy story about Animals to tell people what was happening in Russia. Also there are plenty of times in history where fiction creates a truth. Fiction can become reality it just need enough work at it. Look at science fiction books they have all kinda inventions that didn't exist back then but exist now. I have to think that the fact someone wrote about it long before they made it had some impact. All kinda technology comes from ideas that were originally fiction. There are other examples but I am kinda running dry right now.... (I just got up 4 hours early so I am tired) good luck on your paper I hope some of that helped. |

I think that in a way truth can capture your fiction because it brings out reality and destroys your dreams and ideals. So for me I am still weighing the differences. Thanks pocky for your input. It reminds me alot about myths and how they try to capture a ideal or belief through fiction. Example being: the Greek myth where a certain woman gets a wish from a god and she asks to live for ever. she lives for ever but then all her family dies and her friends and all she loves and likes leaves and she is still there. When two children come up and ask her if she could have anything that she could wish for what would it be? Of course she says to die. So I suppose the story is teaching people the truth/Ideal and belief, that we all as humans should die and its for the better. Edited Thu Sep 06 2007, 08:00PM | ||
