Super down for a rerun. I think we all have some old connections to plan something ahead of time, on an updated game, or even outdated, for all of us to do an event on. I would look forward to that very much

Ok, so i recently purchased an RCA Dual format DVD recorder/player for my home theatre. It is replacing an old vcr/dvd combo, and i have intentions on using the recording feature. However, i have run into some problems. Here is the background on my system: I have a 3 year old Sony Wega (pronounced 'Vega') 42" LCD rear projection TV. Its the shit. HD ready. We also have digital cable, and HD channels (about 10 of them). Fucking awesome. I also have a cd player, a cable box, and a 7 speaker home theatre system, connected to a giant box thing where i switch through what audio i want sent to the speakers (video 1-my dvd player, video 2-my cable, video 3, radio, aux, and some others, but they dont matter). The problem: Im not sure of the exact configuration, but i believe the cable comes out through the wall, and into the cable box, and then through to the tv and then somewhere in the line it goes into my dvd player and out to somewhere (not sure where). What i dont understand is that even though being connected, the cable channels dont work on the dvd player, yet they work on the tv. What i think: Maybe its the signal coming through? Im getting a digital signal, but it hooked into one of those regular cable slot things, so maybe it cant read the signal. Why i posted the topic: I also recieved in the box an HDMI cable. I had no idea what this was, until i did some research. Apparently, it has something to do with HD (haha). So i looked for a slot that the cord would fit in, and nothing. I want to know what the fuck this does, and if theres a way to hook it up to my TV. -[link]- According to some user comments, my TV does not have an HDMI slot (which i proved to be true) If you need any more info, post and ill get all the model numbers and shit of all my appliances. |

Whoa, these home theatres are getting more complex all the time. Personally, I have limited knowledge on the topic but from what I have done in my setup, I hooked the cable into the cable box, then a seperate cord goes from the cable box into the TV. Then there was a video input behind the cable box where I plugged in the DVD cords. You say the signal is not going from the cable box to the DVD? I'd hate to suggest the obvious but make sure the cords go to the right inputs/outputs and the illustrations that come in the manuals are key. Try hooking the DVD player directly up to the cable box, and not the 'giant box thing'. They usually show various diagrams and schematics depending on what components you want to include in your setup and what cord to put where. If all of that is buttoned up and correct, then you can eliminate that as a cause and move on... If your DVD is hooked into the cable box, then you would use the same video for your cable and DVD. But if you have the DVD player hooked into the 'giant box thing' then thats why its not getting a direct signal from your cable. Honestly I think there is some option that you need to turn on in the DVD player's menu but I'm not sure. Have you hit up the instruction manual regarding how to configure signal input? When I hooked up my cable box a few years ago, I also set up a DVD player to the back of it, but I vaguely recall having to use the remote that came with the DVD player to change some sort of UHF or UHV setting or something. I say play with the remote that came with the DVD player and find the correct setting (I think its similar to setting 'video 1' for the DVD player's input.) Or go old-school to the days of NES and make sure the TV is on channel 3. ![]() ![]() |

Is it an upconversion DVD player? If it's not, the dvd's wont look very good on your HDTV unless you get an HD dvd player, or an upconversion dvd player. Even so, this one appears to be, but the HDMI cable is almost a must. It increases the quailty so much, it makes it look actually HD instead of just a stretched regular picture. If it's anything like a tivo, you have to put the cable into the dvr thing first, then another one going to the TV. Then, you should be able to SCAN available channels using your DVR recorder thingy. Then you can see them all through that. HD and DVR combining is SO complicated now. |

it goes like this: outlet to cable IN on cable box, then another cable from cable OUT to your VCR cable IN (could be TV in) then another cable from your VCR cable OUT to your tv. |
