Well, I'm thinking of getting Linux. but I need some advice first. Like, what is the best version? Will I be able to run CS:S on it, as well as x fire or what not? Help! | ||

well i know a little about it. theres a free version called Fedora Core 5 made by Red Hat and you can play CSS on it...ill have to get more info on it though..ill get back to ya | ||

Bleek: There is not a native client 'port of HL2/CS:S to the GNU/Linux platform. Most people use Cedega to play CS:S using a GNU/Linux machine. It's been quite some time since I messed with any of this, but the most lasting impression was that the ATI drivers for the Linux kernel were total shit. NVIDIA has nice kernel support, though, and most Cedega gamers have NVIDIA cards. Having an ATI card myself, I had limited frame rate success with trying to run CS:S with Cedega. This was a year ago and I haven't kept up with it since then... maybe things have changed. I would also suggest that if you're not familiar with even a particular GNU/Linux distribution (and use terms like "Linux version" when you are really talking about distributions) then this probably isn't the best time to get started. I'm not saying you are incapable of making it work... just that it may be overwhelming with the amount of crap you'll need to learn and get comfortable with. |

Do a ton of research, and you'll be able to do it. I ran Linux when I was in middle school, I think you can do it now. (I did have to skip school a few times to work on getting my wireless working, there was very poor wireless support back then, it's much better now, but still not perfect). I run Xubuntu on my laptop, but I rarely do anything with it except AIM and some internet browsing. It's mainly because this laptop can't really handle Windows anymore. | ||

yer not gonna have much success with gaming on linux at this point. if you want to try linux anyway, i would suggest Ubuntu. they can send you free CDs/DVDs or you can download it off the site (ubuntu.com). Ubuntu is a good distro if you are starting out (it's a good distro anyway) because there is great community support available. I've never used linux as my primary OS, but I used it in college and now at work. I've found that Ubuntu is the easiest to set up and get running. |

I agree that Ubuntu is excellent to start with, and probably good to stick with for any desktop system. Ubuntu and it's variants are largely based on Debian, which is by far the GNU/Linux distro that I most respect and appreciate. So yeah... if you do not have much *nix experience then trying to get CS:S working is a really tall order. I suggest you keep gaming on your current doze box, and get familiar with something like Ubuntu on an older computer. Also, you can get a copy of VMware and concurrently run multiple OS's on the same machine. Performance of "guest" OS's with VMware is abysmal in my opinion, but it is extremely convenient when you do not want to dual boot or completely dedicate your workstation to another OS. |

bleek, i tried to run css on linux and i really wont recommend it. Its a hassle and when steam releases an update you wont be able to play for a few days or week until a new version of the app you use for linux is released. I say Linux is not a OS for gaming, unless you plan on playing Starcraft, Doom 1-3, tetris, mario. Solution: Partition your hard disk. If you want to make Linux your default OS, make a partition on your disk around 5-10gb Size (depending on how many games you will install) and install windows there. The rest of the disk use it for linux. Well, I really didnt intended to post something in the forums, except that I will probably be playing again in a few days. Cya around... |

There are programs to run CSS on linux, but the programs take system resources to run, meaning less for CSS, or a slower game. Linux is the shit for getting things done. You can run windows programs on it too, using Wine. Fedora core 6 is the best. Gert the DVD. |
