Super down for a rerun. I think we all have some old connections to plan something ahead of time, on an updated game, or even outdated, for all of us to do an event on. I would look forward to that very much

Glitch, Amped, Krem, (anyone else who can interpret the following geekery), this one's for you. Ok so after a glowing review from one of my fellow Geek Squadders, I decided to build a media server and load it with Windows Home Server 2008, and enough hardware to run a gaming server off it as well. Now, I realize the media portion doesn't require that much computing power (which is probably why win home server only comes in 32 bit), but my concern is that with a 32 bit OS, the gaming portion will suffer due to not being able to recognize all the ram (right now 4GB, possibly upgrading to 8GB depending on the need). The reason I am so interested in win home server are these reasons: >I can access my home network from any computer with internet access >It grants priority of system resources to background processes rather than user processes >It creates images of networked computers on a daily basis (ex. you get a virus today, so you roll back to yesterday's image and *boop*, problem solved) >It monitors the health of the computers on the network (Don't know how accurate this is, as I have yet to see a good windows antimalware tool) >I will be able to remote in from any computer and get a desktop GUI >Most obvious, It will allow me to centralize all my media and play movies on my TV So I guess it comes down to these questions: Does it make a difference if I'm running win home server 32 bit and want to run a gaming server off of say 6GB of ram? It seems to me that programs such as TF2 dedicated server are their own independent operating systems, and may be able to see all the resources. If this is not a viable option, is there a Linux equivalent that will have similar features? How might I go about setting up a gaming server (any tuts?). Anyway, not the main issue of this thread. Mostly concerned with the first two questions. Edited Sun Dec 20 2009, 07:38AM |

Could give Ubuntu Server a try. Probably more configurable than WHS. Debian is another one my profs talk about sometimes. | ||
