Dear acquaintances, I am an intern at a non-profit organization who wants to start a gaming cafe in this here city. I need to create a budget and write all the letters to local companies asking for moniez. Where you come in: I have been looking into getting HP computers because they are reliable, are nice systems, and I just have better experience working with them. My question is, would it be cheaper to build cheap gaming computers, or go through a company like HP. I need everything to be as cheap as possible, but at the same time working well and on computers that can run TF2 and CS:Source efficiently and not like shit. All the gaming will be done on a LAN network and they would all be hooked up in a bus topology and probably not on an internet network right away. Just linked together, offline Any advice and help would be appreciated |

building your own computers is always cheaper, however if you don't have a strong grasp on how to do it and what you are doing it could be some pretty bad news. It'd be a lot of work, but if it were me(i love building new rigs) i'd do it myself and save the money. It doesn't take much to run css and tf2 at a decent pace so making the computer really wouldn't cost a terrible lot. the only thing i got against going through a company is that you'll pay extra for the brand name and get mediocre parts. Even if they advertise OO A QUAD CORE BLAH BLAH, it usually has a shit mobo and cheap ram, really if you're gonna be playin css and tf2 you can suffice with like a $50-$60 cpu and some idk $30-$40 ram with a decent mobo. $70-$90 on a vid card and you are pretty much set. if i get time later i'll throw together a list and price of a decent css/tf2 comp to give you an idea, how many computers you looking to have and any idea on how much money? or is that something you have to come up with and pitch to said people. Cheaper to build your own. If you dont know how, practice on some old thing, spend 3 weeks looking and learning new tech. If not, DO NOT go with Dell, Alienware, HP, or Compaq, or Toshiba. Go with GATEWAY. I never liked them, but Acer bought them out and their computers are very very very well priced to the point its hard to compete with when building and selling my own. A Core i7 build i had for $1600, the same one Gateway was charging $1800. All the other companies were charging $2600+. Goodluck bro. Anymore questions, just ask me. P.S. Badnewsbear: Yes, I did this for my senior project for highschool. The difference now is I made the space and used shitty old office computers that barely run CS: 1.6, now I want to upgrade EVERYTHING and make it an actual, enjoyable, better technology hang out spot. non profit because we can't technically take profit from it Peace and Glitch: I do know how to make a computer. Last christmas Glitch approved parts for my desktop gaming computer and it's fucking SICK, and I learned how to put it together from a friend and it's all really easy. I've done 4 others since for friends with a 100% success rate. I've been building cheap gaming rigs on Newegg and have a few I like, but you guys know what parts are better and what the better deals, so if you guys could make cheap builds for me, I'll just buy the HP monitors and headsets from the company (I got a deal through one of their managers where they will take off 20% if I do it through the company) Glitch: I did NOT know that about Gateway. I will sincerely reconsider their computers. I love Acer, but I hate Gateways with a passion. I don't really think that taking them over would have done much, but ill take your word and look into them. If you guys could make some builds on Newegg and save them and share them with me, that would be fucking AWESOME. Or if you guys knew of companies that had special deals for non profits or ANYTHING to make this cheaper, that'd be awesome. Because technically right now, I'm just making brownies and selling them to locals for $100 a week. I need better fundraisers or places to get major donations to make this happen, the only thing is I'm trying to do it as a surprise for him without him really knowing what I'm going through to do it. That's why I kind of wanted to do it all on my own and just surprise him with everything. |

DO NOT BUY GATEWAYS! At Best Buy I shed a tear every time I see a customer walk out the door with a gateway, because i know i will be seeing that computer on my bench at Geek Squad in about a month or two. I would say that about 7/10 computers that come in through me are Gateways, almost always for mobo issues (2/10 HPs and 1/10 Toshiba, but I do not really consider those to be bad brands because we sell sooo many of them compared to other brands). They look appealing with their i7's, but they use shit parts for everything else. Gateways are nothing but a money pit for repairs. I agree with everyone else that you should build your own. i have a rig on newegg for 600$, and I'll be working on an i5 rig for about the same price. CPU -[link]- Mobo -[link]- RAM (x2 to make 4GB) -[link]- HDD -[link]- Optical Drive -[link]- Video Card -[link]- PSU -[link]- Case -[link]- However, since this is for gaming purposes only, you might wanna consider getting a smaller hard drive (no need for over 320Gb) and putting the money into 2+GB of DDR3 RAM. Also I think an antec or corsair might be a better choice for a PSU |

Build your own, you won't ever get exactly what you're looking for if you don't. All my family's computers were built up, and we have hardly had any problems besides maybe replacing a mobo in one every 3 years. And I lol'd @ Bandito. Edited Sun Oct 25 2009, 06:11AM |

solid build toastey but i got a feeling for the money, zero aint got that kind, tomorrow in class i'll get you a decent real cheap build honestly i have a $50 cpu $70 vid card and like a $70-90 mobo with some $50 ram and it runs css very very well, it is oc'd but i played on it a lot before i oc'd it and it still did more than fine |

the problem with building my own is that it doesn't come with a good OS or Monitor or any keyboard or mouse. Those things are all wayyy cheaper with online builds. Windows 7 is free, keyboard and mouse is like $30, and a monitor is free in most cases, but even if it's not it'd still be cheaper to go through company. | ||
