Super down for a rerun. I think we all have some old connections to plan something ahead of time, on an updated game, or even outdated, for all of us to do an event on. I would look forward to that very much

So, I have my license and I've had it for a couple of months now but I can't drive people for another 2 months. If I'm driving while following the rules; obeying speed limit, road rules, buckled, and all that shit, can a cop pull me over and just ask for my license. Don't they need probable cause? I'm wondering because I drive my friends from school to their houses and my gf to and from my house. I drive carefully and properly, but can a cop pull me over just because he feels like it? I haven't gotten pulled over and have no previous record, I'm just curious.

I highly doubt cops wanna pull over for fun... even if they pull u over, if u drive good and since u have provisional license then you can carry 1 friend and ull be fine Also you can carry as many family members as you have seat belts Edited Thu Nov 15 2007, 09:33PM |

Well i just know, cops can make up whatever they want. If they really want to be jackasses, they could do that. Cops could just say that u swerved once and he though u were drunk.

Bottom line: there are decent cops, and dick headed cops. We've all encountered both. When it comes to driving, yes, they should have a "reason" to pull you, but just remember you are not entitled to drive. Driving is a privledge, not a right. |

They can pull you over without probable cause, or reason. I was pulled over for turning around in a parking lot. Not kidding either, lol.

LOL at your subject. If there are any other cops on this forum, I'd be fucking shocked. In regards to your question. You need to understand the difference between the terms "probable cause," "reasonable suspicion," and "investigative detention." I can go into it but it would probably just get skipped over. Each situation is different but it's all about how an officer articulates the stop. Specifically, you have a license that tells you something is illegal. You know it's illegal to have passengers in your car but you are trying to find a loophole to carry passengers or substantiate carrying passengers (here's the keywords) against the law. There is a reason younger drivers aren't allowed to have passengers. There is no substitute for actual driving experience and younger drivers, no matter how much they say it, don't pay attention making them more prone to accidents. It's bad enough when a kid gets killed driving but it's worse when he/she kills their passenger(s) and has to live with that the rest of their lives. OK, off my soapbox. For your "scenario," I would stop someone under reasonable suspicion that they looked under the legal age to be carrying passengers. But many officers, including myself, don't need that. There are SO many damn laws for your vehicle and for driving that I could find something to stop you and then find out if you were of age to be carrying passengers. For example, I see you driving and I think you are underage and carrying passengers illegal. I pull in behind you and find a reason to stop you. Maybe one of your lights is out that lights up your license plate, or you have something hanging off your rear view mirror that impedes your view in my opinion, or your tint on the windows looks beyond legal limits. I can find something to stop you if I want to stop you. Plus, when a cop is behind you, everyone is stupid and will make a driving mistake so it will give me justification to stop you. Yea but u also have to think of this Ted, we had a cop come and speak to us. He said the shit u see on TV like the chases and pulling people over is like 10% of the time, the rest is paper work. You think they really want to pull u over for having too many passengers in your car? Some cops would do that, but i don't think most would.

Real life example: My best friend is about a year older than everyone else I know, so naturally he was the first to get his license and he became the "shuttle" for everyone. He decided not to wait the 6 months (at least thats what it is here in MA) and often took passengers in his car. One day we were going to soccer practice and we were all packed in the car like sardines. Sure enough a cop happened to see us and put on his lights. We weren't speeding but he claimed we were when he pulled us over. He made us get out of the car and walk the rest of the way to soccer practice and my friend lost his license for a month. Example two: My other friend who is slightly older than me had his gf in the car one time during his 6 months. He got on the gas a little hard at an intersection (prolly getting road head lol) and spun the tires just a tad. A cop at the intersection heard the tires squeal and pulled him over. Same thing happened only he lost his license for 3 months and got a fine. Bottom line: It's not worth it to take passengers in your car. Just wait the two months so you can start off with a clean driving record. Sure it's highly unlikely you'll get caught, but if you do, you prolly won't be driving with friends for even longer than the two months. |

I'm 99% sure that in PA you can have as many passengers as you'd like as soon as you get your license. P.S. Drunk you're exaggerating massively when you say that only 90% of the stops are like clockwork... It's a much higher percent. |
