Freedom of speech is really just an allusion First off your right freedom of speech is becoming a illusion more and more these days. It is truly sad. There are certain bounds that I agree shouldn't be crossed and I don't fight such things because I am willing to give up those rights. The examples you gave are all things that just about everyone doesn't care about giving up. The right to protest things though you shouldn't give up. This is a example of our right to protest starting to be treaded on. I am to lazy to dig up other examples but this is not the first. You might be right that it was slander to call him gay if they know for a fact he wasn't but I don't feel that slander alone should give them that big of a settlement. I think that the fact they are the most hated family in America had a roll to play in why they had to pay so much for a case of slander. You can say whatever you want now about it but just watch out one day you wont have such a right it truly will be a illusion. Kcow wrote ... Pockyninja wrote ... This isn't a great day in my opinion. Don't get me wrong I don't like this family but the fact that they can get sued because they used their freedom of speech. I don't care what they said they shouldn't be punished for their god given right. Unless they were going around breaking shit they have the right to babel whatever nonsense that comes out their mouth but we have the right to hate them and be pissed off. Today we see another downfall of the First amendment unfortunately it is getting beat to shit and this is just another example. Be happy all you want for their pain but just remember that to gain that victory you sacrificed some of your own freedom. nostie wrote ... Freedom of speech... yes. Freedom of the place to display that freedom of speech... maybe. let's hope they go bankrupt and die of hunger. They have the right to so long as it is not privet property that the owner has forbid them from being on. Lets talk being American. I think one of the prime ideals of being American is respect for ones country. Well first of all, they hate america because they like gays. Un-American. Second, we honor our men and women in the Army, Navy, Air Force, wherever. Un-American. And most of all, we respect the deceased. Un-American. Westboro baptist church may has well be illegal aliens. They certainly don't look like they deserve protection from out "god given" rights I don't agree at all. It is our right to hate out own country if we damn well please that is what it means to be free. I know for a fact our government was found on a attempt at freedom. It was the freedom to think, say, and believe whatever you want to. They were trying to escape the oppression they had in Europe. Just because you don't agree with their ideas doesn't give you the ability to take their rights away. People who say disliking their country or a certain group of people or anything else is unamerica clearly know nothing about our own history. Lets see people hatting America we can find throughout history we even had a civil war. Till people started picking up guns over it and trying to leave they were allowed to say what they wanted to about how they disliked this country. When Bush got to be president most people didn't like America to much. We had blacks as slaves and when they were released we even had laws for "separate yet equal" as a country it was unamerican to socialize and be friends with a black person we discriminated a whole race of people for no good reason. We have a history of hating other people hell we used the Chinese to make the railroad in fact the saying going to hell in a hand basket comes from that. They would be lowered down to put dynamite in the cliff and if they didn't get back up then they died. To be an American was meant to be free but the reality of it is we are never truly free. Personally I find this a sad fact. If you don't like what I have to say then you can argue it but hell your just using your god given right as a American. |

pocky, this goes along with people getting sued by people who tried to rob their house and couldn't find their way back out of the house... the courts sympathize too much... juries are stupid. |

Those are two entirely different things. We are talking about a protest which is our right in the bill of rights vs committing a crime. That is like saying a battle ship and apple are the same thing. Your just arguing with me because you are predgist against their believes. Just because you think and almost everyone and even me think that they are assholes for what they are saying it doesn't mean you can discriminate against them. What your doing makes you no better then them. If it were anyone else protesting a funeral for any reason you agreed with you wouldn't mind at all and you would be on my side if they got arrested. Before you respond to those comments I want you to think really hard about what you would do if what I just said was true. Edited Sat Nov 03 2007, 08:28AM |

you guys didn't understand the story: A man who was trying to rob someone's house could not find his way out of the house again. (he got stuck in the garage) after 2 days, he got out somehow, and sued the family because he couldn't find his way out, and he won. My point was that the courts sympathize with people too much. lawyers can make people look like victims. A man was mugged, and he shot the mugger in self defense. If he had killed the man with the shot, nothing would have come of it... but he shot him in the head, and messed up his brain. The mugger sued the guy, and won. WHATEVER. All I'm trying to say is that just because this guy had to go through one day of some assholes picketing a funeral, he sued and got millions of dollars out of it. (which is bullshit) Pockyninja wrote ... Your just arguing with me because you are predgist against their believes. Hah. no. not at all. Not to sound like an ass, because I know that i do this all of the time, but don't act like you know what I'm thinking. |
