For those of you who haven't heard, mentos and diet cola explode when you mix them. this website has a video of this being done -[link]- just imagine offering a friend a mentos then daring him/her to chug their coke. |

while we're on the topic of things that go boom, if anyone has/ knows anyone with a pool or hottub, they probably have some muriatic acid (pool filter cleaner) lying around in their basement. swipe that and fill a 2 liter bottle about 1/4 way with the acid. then cram some bunched up aluminum foil through the neck and quickly screw the top back on... and don't forget to run (it's called an acid bomb for a reason). You have anywhere from 30 secs to 5 mins before the thing blows (depending how much the percentage of HCL acid is in the filter cleaner). First the liquid will turn greenish black, then white smoke forms in the bottle (this is where you duck), then BOOM. The white smoke you see in the bottle is hydrogen gas, so keep it away from sparks or flames (unless you want a really big boom). A little warning, If you decide to do this, you are dealing with acid which WILL burn your skin if it gets on you, and will bleach your clothes. The fumes from this will make you vomit instantly, so don't be stupid around this stuff. We've found out that the half gallon Mott's Apple Juice containers work best for the biggest boom, but you need really potent acid otherwise the plastic is too thick and it won't blow (nothing more dangerous than an un-exploded bottle). Yeah, so there it is, I'm a pyro. And it doesn't help that there is an abondoned missle silo down the street from me where I can test all this shit out

I doubt it explodes. What are the properties of diet cola and Mentos which cause a combustion? I saw the video. But, we really have no idea what that person is putting in the coke. It could be lithium for all we know. People used to say that Pop Rocks and Soda would cause your stomach to explode. Not true. Or that if a bird ate alka seltzer it would blow up. Not true. Until someone explains the explosive properties of the two, this is nothing more than an urban legend. |

Our chem teatcher taught us this and thats how I know *clears throat* the HCl in the muriatic acid reacts with the Al in a decay reaction. The chlorine bonds with the aluminum which turns the liquid green/black. The left over hydrogen accumulates and expands, creating the bubbles and the white gas. As the reaction continues, the pressure builds in the bottle until it begins to bulge and evenchually explodes. And thats how it works, so dont tell me you doubt it explodes, cause I've done it many times and I don't make shit up like some people. |
