So I quit drinking 3 months ago now. Which is good, being an alcoholic kind of sucked anyway. And I've picked up some excercise again. I've been running, swimming, cycling and doing pushups, situps& pullups. I feel alot better. So now I'm looking at my diet and how devoid of nutrition it's been. Here's what I've done so far: Began taking One-A-Day Multi-vitamins -[link]- This has the majority of your essential vitamins needed. Began taking Kirklands Fish Oil Concentrate -[link]- This has Omega-3 fatty acids which does something special to protect my heart. I'm also eating 1oz of Peanuts a day. -[link]- These have anti-oxidants and some other things that make me awesome. Oh oh can't forget the OJ in the mornings for the Calcium & Vitamin C & D! -[link]- I've stopped drinking sweetened ice tea in lieu of Tea's Tea more anti-oxidants of different kinds then the peanuts. -[link]- I'm gonna start cereal in the mornings for the calcium, vitamin d & fiber. -[link]- I also began throwing yogurt into mid afternoon snacks. Calcium, Potassium, Protein and bacteria that fights other bacteria! WOW! -[link]- And I'm also eating healthy foods like, sushi, chicken and some red meat. My question is... what am I missing? What do I need to add to be healthy? I bought a book on nutrition but it hasn't come in yet and won't be here until tomorrow. SO YOU FUCKERS NEED TO HELP ME NOW!!! Edited Fri Aug 29 2008, 02:44AM |

Walnuts, a few walnuts a day are good I forget why. Read it on the vending machine when I got my X-rays Also, the sun's rays are horrible for you. And I've read up and learned that if you use sunscreen 3/7 days a week, you are 30% less likely to get cancer. Think about it. |

don't skimp on your pushups, and keep your body surprised on what type of pushup your doing. when I do them when I'm not in the dojo, I call them out loud to myself, I call down, up, half down, half up, hold. And I mix it up. If you're just doing up down up down, your muscle memory will kick in in about 3 weeks, and you won't be building, just repeating. Add in weights, sit ups/pushups and what not are only good up to your body weight and not the full amount. Also, don't forget to do leg builders, outside or running/swimming/biking. Throw in some squats and some lunges, maybe some side steps. And mix your running with speed and pace, throw some sprints into your running. This way keeps your body on it's toes, and also builds up cardio but making your heart rate get up higher. Also, multis are great, but if you're not looking to build, but live healthy, get some soy protein, it's amazing for you, and make sure you get an excess of the greatest vitamin in the world. B-12. Seriously, this shit does more for you than almost any other vitamin there is, just don't freak when your piss is neon yellow. And stick with it, it's more a mental game (unless you get hurt). Seriously, the hardest part is being mentally strong enough. I'm not, I need someone yelling at me, and kicking my ass, or I slack big time. |

Any gym enthusiast will tell you that nutrition is everything. It sounds like you got a pretty good diet going for you (must cost a fortune lol), but the important thing to remember is to do what works for you, not what other's say is good for you. I've been eating a high protein (red meat occasionally fish) and carb (bread, mostly buns for the protien, beer) diet for at least half a year now and I'd say I'm easily in the best shape of my life. I also go to the gym every day. I can honesty say I can't remember the last time I was sick (pretty impressive because I work at a supermarket, where all the dirt children touch things) Another important thing is your vitamins. I know the side panel looks all pretty with its 100%, but the truth is, every single vitamin is dependent on another vitamin. In order to get the benefits, the proportions must be right, or else your body body will take the missing vitamins from itself, and that's no good. An example is any good multivitamin will have about 3x more b-6 than b-12 (boosts your metabolism). GNC makes a real good vitamin and is probably the most balanced I've seen -[link]- I don't know what your goal is exactly, but if you're trying to lose weight don't be afraid to feed yourself! You have to take in calories in order to have energy to burn fat. Eat a good breakfast and do a lot of cardio. Increase your running distance/laps/bike ride every two weeks. Also have many meals in smaller proportions (instead of 3 big meals, have 5 - 7 small or snack sized meals). If you let me know what your goal is exactly I can probably help you out even more. My goal is to live long. I have no intention of building muscle or training for anything really. My goal is to reduce the amount of damage I do to myself as much as possible and replace said things with productive activities. But the goal is to live forever... and be healthy... so I can be happy, when I'm old. (22 now) Question. How many calories should I be taking in a day? P.S. I'm 5'8", average build, 157lbs. P.S.S. I'm adding yogurt and cereal into the above diet. Edited Fri Aug 29 2008, 02:33AM |

Calories are weird. Durring my swim season, to build muscle and lose weight, I'm supposed to take anywhere from 3500-4000 calories. Thats pretty hard while staying healthy. Normaly I'd say about 2k calories, if you're staying cardio esk. And the goal to a long life really is cardio and nutrition. |

2000 calories is my lunch, but like i said, I go to the gym every day. You should at least try doing free weights (especially at your age, it's a lot harder to get started later on in life), they're surprisingly addictive. At first just go to the gym 3 time a week, maybe try an NO supplement for a little help at first. Get ready to be sore as a mother fucker for the first two weeks, but if you can make it through that (most people don't) and you really do push yourself, then you'll notice you'll be less and less sore after workout days. you probably wont see any gains until the first month has passed, but once you start making progress, you'll be well impressed with yourself. I know, I used to be the little skinny kid who never wanted anything to do with the gym, but a year later anyone who hasn't seen me in a while can't believe how jacked I am. Trust me, you won't regret it if you stick to it. |

.4ngryToasters wrote ... It sounds like you got a pretty good diet going for you (must cost a fortune lol)... Well considering I used to eat fast food twice a day, or pizza whenever I wanted and a whole shit ton of ice cream (never got fat somehow, thank you metabo-ma-lism) this diet is probably less expensive. I had a $600/mo food bill on the other stuff. I can buy a years worth of vitamins online for like $100. I bought 144 oz's of individually wrapped 1oz bags of peanuts online for I think $23. OJ & Milk is cheap enough. You can buy a fuckload of cereal, 96 individually wrapped bowls for $30. The most expensive meal is lunch, which is usually either sushi, chicken or red meat w/ tea & yogurt afterwards. That's a $15 meal right there. Edited Fri Aug 29 2008, 03:02AM |
